内容简介

Despite the rapid increase in the number of English medium instruction (EMI) courses offered in Chinese universities across different disciplinary areas in recent years, the research base on classroom discourse in these EMI courses in China is still very thin. This paper analyzes EMI lectures collected from a medical school at a university in Southern China. Using systemic functional linguistics (SFL) as the theoretical framework, the research focuses on the textual structure and the packaging of information in medical classroom discourse, looking specifically into the choices of Themes, as defined by SFL, and thematic progression patterns as well as multimodal devices employed by teachers to help organize the lectures and make it easier for students to follow the flow of the discourse. It will be shown that effective use of textual and multimodal devices by the lecturers can serve to make up for insufficiencies in language proficiency and accuracy and improve the quality of classroom discourse.
尽管近年来中国大学在不同学科领域开展的英语教学（EMI）课程数量迅速增加，但在中国针对EMI课程的课堂话语研究基础仍然非常薄弱。本文分析了在中国南方一所医学院收集的EMI课程，以系统功能语言学（SFL）为理论框架，重点研究医学课堂话语中的信息结构和信息包装，具体考察系统功能语言学中的主位选择，主位发展模式以及教师采用的多模态手段，帮助组织课堂，使学生更容易跟随课程节奏。可以看出，教师有效地使用文本和多模态手段可以弥补语言能力和准确性方面的不足，提高课堂话语的质量。


嘉宾简介

Prof. Chang Chenguang is Professor of linguistics at the Department of English, Sun Yat-sen University. His research interests include Functional Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, Language Education, and Australian Studies, and he has published over 50 journal articles and book chapters, and nearly 20 books and edited volumes in these areas. Apart from his publications, he is co-editor of the journals Functional Linguistics (Springer), and Annual Review of Functional Linguistics (Higher Education Press). He is also the series co-editor of the M. A. K. Halliday Library Functional Linguistics Series (Springer).
常晨光教授是中山大学英语系语言学教授。他的研究兴趣包括功能语言学，语篇分析，语言教育和澳大利亚研究，在这些领域发表了50多篇期刊文章和书籍章节，以及将近20部书籍和编辑卷。除了以上出版物外，他还是功能语言学（Springer）期刊和《功能语言学年度评论》（高等教育出版社）的联合主编，同时也是The M.A.K. Halliday Library Functional Linguistics Series丛书（Springer）的联合主编。
